Bottle from a Durbuy bottle shop - many thanks, Anke! Pours clear pale golden with a lasting, thin, white head. Aroma & taste cover notes of apple, unripe pear, citrus, wheat, bread & yeast. Some spicy accents here and there, yeasty fruitiness throughout. Dry, spicy, bready finish, soft peppery hops. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Just okay in what it aims to be, I suppose.

Bottle from bottle shop in Durbuy - thanks, Anke! Pours hazy brown with a thin, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of sherry, red apple, wood, vinegar, redcurrant, wet hay, shoe polish. Taste has sour redcurrant & plum mixed with vinegar, solid bitter undercurrent of wood & hay, vague hint of polish in the back. Dry, herbal hoppy finish, tart & vinegar-like, soft alcoholic effect of sherry, slightly oxidized perhaps. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Decent enough Sour with barrel accents.

Lienne in Lierneux, close to Vielsalm in the Belgian province of Liège, taking on the tripel style, one of their newest ones to date. Egg-white, membrane-lacing, mousy, medium sized, slowly breaking head on a cloudy ochre-tinged golden blonde beer, shifting to a somewhat 'dirty' beige with sediment. Aroma of sweet ripe Honeydew melon, banana bread, canned pineapple, powder sugar melting on a hot pancake, candy apple, stewed pear, bread pulp, hints of straw, camomile, cake dough, young 'genièvre'. Fruity, sweet onset, ripe pear, melon, banana, candied pineapple and fried apple, fizzy carbonation, full and rather 'fluffy' mouthfeel. Soft white-bready maltiness with ongoing banana and pineapple esters as well as a coating of honeyish unfermented sugars; floral hops add a light spiciness in the end, eventually turning out longer than expected and even a bit rooty in the very end, while a dash of 'jenever'-like alcohol establishes a gentle warmth. Some clove-like phenols and bready-yeasty elements linger amidst this warmth, but the fruity sweetness remains the dominant factor, though it does not impair drinkability anywhere. Sweet tripel alright, so almost by definition intended for larger audiences, but remarkably elegant in being a sweet tripel, with a surprisingly hop bitter tail and elegant 'yellow' fruitiness. Refined for a style that is usually produced in a much less thoughtful manner - somehow I knew this Lienne interpretation would not disappoint...

Barrel aged sour ale by this underrated craft brewery in the Liège province. Gusher, but slow enough to remain manageable with enough time and patience. Initially audibly crackling, eventually creamy, pale yellowish beige, small-bubbled, thickly membrane-lacing, medium thick, very stable head; misty, deep and warm orange-amber robe with even a slight copper-bronze glow, some dead yeast bits at the bottom. Rich, very estery bouquet of cherry plum, unripe nectarine, sour white grapes, maracuja, medlar, ripe purple gooseberries, red apple, strong vanilla from the oak and also actual wet wood, unsugared yoghurt, pineapple, roses, fresh figs, quite some Bretty 'horseblanket', wood sorrel leaves, dry sherry, stale orange juice, rosemary, brown honey, sourdough, caramel - and then some very vague 'band aid' in the background, fortunately fading again quickly so I will not take this into account too much in rating this beer. Evidently tart onset, lots of colourful estery fruitiness varying between sour apples, passionfruit, grapes and plums, with a sweetish core softening the sourness; crisp, fizzy carbonation but not too much for the style. Rounded, full, smooth body, caramelly malt sweetness with a biscuity edge, dried by this juicy, very fruity, lactic sourness; this play of sourness and sweetness remains entertaining till the end, when the woody factor sets in and the sourness wins the battle, because it gets the aid of a quite strongly drying tannic wood effect, pushing up a lot of that 'old vanilla'-like scent typical for oak wood as well. Still some apple- and even caramel-like sweetness keeps lingering in the background, even when - unexpectedly - a brief, but notably leafy, earthy hop bitter note appears. And so sour, sweet and bitter are all tied together in the end, with that 'sedate', drying and mildly acidic lactic sourness and fruitiness prevailing, in a juicy, colourful way. I had very positive experiences with this brewery before (right from when they started, really) and this one does not disappoint, this is a beautiful American style blonde sour with strong 'oud bruin' tendencies, streamlined, rich and full, without too many unpleasant effects (apart from the inclination towards gushing and that volatile accent of band aid). A difficult endeavour relatively well executed, in the vein of e.g. De Leite, with even a vague Alvinne echo, though that is perhaps stretching things a bit...

Bottle from bottle shop in Durbuy. Pours hazy golen with a lasting, small, foamy, white head. Aroma of yeast, malt, wort, cheese, banana, ripe apricot & apple, honey. Taste is a yeasty (almost wort-like) & plain malty profile, balancing ripe fruits (banana, apple) with a soft spicy bitterness. Sweet, malty & yeasty finish, slightly grassy hoppy, but also 'grainy' bitter. Soft glow of 'plain' alcohol. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. I tend not to be prejudiced but I didn't expect much from this umpteenth 'Belgian Ale'.

Bouteille 33cl de Malt Attacks, BB 06/2020.
Couleur cuivre, col beige.
