Bottle from Countbeer, thanks! Deep golden color. Hints of caramel and floral notes in the aroma. Floral hops and caramel in the flavor. Malty, maybe a hint of citrus. Good example of the type.

Imperial porter in what is apparently a yearly series by this interesting young Walloon microbrewery, with Papuan coffee - I don't think I ever had coffee from Papua New Guinea so this is intriguing to say the least. Steinie bottle from Dranken Geers in Ghent. Dense, very creamy, thick but regularly shaped, lightly membrane-lacing, mocha-tinged pale beige, frothy head on a very dark chocolate brown beer, practically black, with thin red-burgundy edge. Aroma of cold black coffee and used coffee filters, bitter 'fondant' chocolate, Chocotoff candy, muesli, cola, spice bread, caramel, shoe leather, dried figs, hints of thyme, 'blood'-like iron, black cherry, liquorish, dry dusty earth, vague background sludge-like 'stinky' accent but remaining faint enough not to disturb me. Zingy onset, quite crisp for the style, lots of minerals coming from lively, bit stinging carbonation, candied dates, dried figs and raisins, faint touch blue plum and even ripe black cherry somewhere, sweetish with a thin beefy umami touch, notable sourish undercurrent, bit more outspoken than usual in porters and stouts with a somewhat blackberry-like character even, accentuated by the natural sourish effect of the carbonation; rounded, bit sticky mouthfeel, feeling a tad thinnish for a beer this strength due to that same carbonation effect. Deep and lovely nuttiness in the middle, crushed old dry hazelnuts, toffee and bitter-chocolatey aspects, fruity and minerally notes lingering, rooty finish with indeed some coffee, providing aromatic effects reminiscent of old used coffee filters and diluted coffee grounds as well as extra sourishness connecting with the initial sourish accent; earthy bitterness from roasted malts, bit ashy even, as well as a deep, leafy and spicy hop bitterness. The alcohol accentuates the bitterness in a whisky-ish way but manages not to interfere too much, while clove- and very vaguely liquorish-like phenols develop and a powdery bready effect of the yeast hangs around at the back. A bittersweet malt-and-coffee flavour lingers with this quite outspoken sourishness underneath. Fruity, spicy, somewhat dirty and ashy: this is strong stout and porter with a very clear Belgian streak, distinguished by a quite clear sourish tone all the way through, as in coffee of several days old. I know that the aim must have been to produce a clean, streamlined, focused coffee porter in American vein, but I personally find the earthy, yeasty-fruity and -spicy aspects appearing almost every time a Belgian brewery attempts this, quite charming. I can certainly enjoy this and I applaud Lienne's international approach - more Belgian breweries, also young and small ones, shjunIould follow their example - but one of these is enough.

Bouteille 33cl, BB 05/2019.
