Description
Yorkshire’s Oldest Brewery. Samuel Smith brews a wide range of high quality beers, solely from authentic natural ingredients. The brewery still uses stone Yorkshire squares to ferment all its ales and stouts (except Sovereign and Extra Stout) and the same yeast strain has been used since the 1800s. Whole dried English hop varieties such as Fuggles and Goldings are used to add bitterness and aroma to Samuel Smith’s traditional ales in the antique boiling coppers. Samuel Smith’s uses oak casks for all its naturally conditioned ale. The casks are made and repaired at the Old Brewery by the brewery’s two full time coopers.

Dark chestnut colour. Aroma has light chocolate, hints of grass, white sugar, and orange. Body is thick, especially for the size of beer, with chewy malts, lots of deep fruit (plums, peaches, raisins). Sweet, rich, fruity finish. Sheer quality.

Deep almost black as it pours into the glass with just a hint of red inthe highlights. Creamy rich head. This is classic Porter, done by one of the classic Porter brewers. Toasty and caramel sweet with a nice play between the flavors. Excellent mouthfeel takes the drinker on through to the finish. A benchmark Porter.

Bottle - Poured a clear brown colored beer with a medium head that has very little retention. Smells of hops is clearly present with a very subtle touch of nut sweetness. Taste is very ''creamy'' with again a sweet touch of hazelnut. Medium body with standard carbonation. Overall, this is a good beer but I would have enjoyed it more if the hazelnut taste had been more accentuated.

While the English can't compete with the Germans in Lager production, this isn't a bad English endeavor. Bright, clear, golden color and a flowery hop and malt nose. Nicely balanced sweet malt and bitter hop flavor with a pleasant finish. Not bad.

Bottle – Poured a pitch-black brew with a nice dark foamy head. Aroma is very sweet with linger of maltness. Taste is very sweet with some coffee and chocolate. No strong aftertaste or bitterness. This is a very creamy, easy beer. You can go wrong with that oatmeal stout if you’re a fan of the style.

Paid $8.99 for a 4-pack (12 oz bottles). Lighter amber, with little head. Not an IPAish smell. This smells more of sweet rum or something, but it's not very strong. A good taste... has a hint of grapefruit, but it's not strong... it's a bit on the thin side for what i look for in an IPA, but it is refreshing, nevertheless. Not the best offering from Samuel Smith's, and not that great of an IPA... but I'd be happy if someone offered me one of these.

Paid $2.99 for a 550ml bottle. Mindblowingly beautiful beer. Black as night, with a beautiful brown soft, fluffy head. Smell... ahhh. Sweet chocolate, cherry cordial scent. Extremely appealing!!!! Oh man, fives all over the place. GREAT taste, unbelievably good! Delicious chocolate, roasted nuts, caramel, with the slightest hint of liquor-- really reminds me of a rich cherry cordial at christmas. Great beer! I might even say it's a candidate for a session beer if you're not trying to outdrink your friends.

Black as night with a big, fluffy head that lasts and laces nicely. Nice faint coffee scent... pretty faint, but very appealing. Nice and easy porter. Slighty coffee and chocolate... mmmm this one's a good one. My only complaint is a tinge of a strange aftertaste. Not bad, but leaves me wondering what exactly that is.

Paid $7.99 for a 4-pack. Nice deep brown with a good sized, soft and creamy looking head. Pretty average smell for a nut brown, but I do happen to enjoy the smell. Nice taste. I had originally given it a 4.5, but it wasn't a mindblowingly original taste. Nice & smooth & creamy... A nice beer. If it was a little cheaper, I'd make it a part of a regular rotation.
