Description
In August 1982, our late founder Tony Allen opened Oak Brewery on an industrial estate in Ellesmere Port. After much success, he moved nine years later to a location more central to his trading areas. Phoenix Brewery, Heywood!
Phoenix Brewery was registered in 1874, brewing directly from the Brewery tower and owning over 100 pubs in the local area. Phoenix’s history is still proudly displayed on our seven-story tower.
Building upon our strong foundations, we continue to brew Tony’s longstanding classic beers, whilst introducing innovative new brews. The team are looking forward to welcoming you to our Brewery site – soon to be open to the public for the first time in our history!
In 1996 it took the decision to trade as the name of the brewery Phoenix Brewery.

Half pint, cask in prime condition and served at the right drinking temperature at The Castle, Holborn. Slightly cloudy amber in body colour. Just a line of bubbly head. Sweet malt-fruity to the nose. Fruity hops to the flavour with malts beneath, ending with a bitter twist. Smooth. Typical for the style (London, 03.08.2009).

(Cask at Swann, Liverpool, 18 July 2009) Golden yellow colour with frothy, white head. Fruity, grassy nose with notes of generous doses of grassy, citrussy hops and lemon. Fruity, hoppy taste with lemon, grassy hops and a touch of soap (Brewer’s Gold?). Generous aromatic bitterness. Fairly thin, lacking some in the malt department. Lovely hop character though.

Cask-conditoned at the Imperial (JDW), Exeter 26/07/09. Pale golden in colour with a decent white head. Big, citrus and pineapple hop aroma with some sweet malts in support. Flavours of marmalade, more exotic fruit, digestives, with a decently dry finish. Very drinkable.

On tap, The New Oxford, Manchester, RBESG 09. Smells of a strawberry mivvy. Gorious after a chick pea curry. Aroma of pure strawberry jam. Soft in mouth. It’s pure strawberry, no harsh finish. Good stuff.

RBESG Sheffield 2009, day 3, Smithfields Hotel, Manchester. Cask. Clear golden colour, white head. Aroma of vegetables, sharp fenols. Flavour is light sweet, fruits, vegetables, sulfur. Thin bitter finish. Sigh... The golden ales all start to taste like golden fails to me...
