2003 bottle. First off, thanks to Emily for sendin this gem as an extra. Pours about as good as you can get without being bottle conditioned. Good sized yellow-white head and a marvelous deep red-amber color. Dirty brown and yellow waves as well, quite bright. Smells very full and strong, lots of hops and a slightly spicy/peppery aroma. Mellow and dry caramel as well. Flavor is superb. First off you get a great bitter hops flavor from some nice english-style hops. On the background is a dry caramel-earthy/root flavor. Almost tastes like there is some anise in there, but that’s probably the rye. Body is perfect and flavor is strangely subtle yet full, as a good bitter should be. Beer definitely grows on you as you drink it and the aftertaste of sweet molasses/caramel and low acid hops is wonderful. If this was bottle conditioned, this would be one of the best beers ever made. I hope to test that theory at the brewery with the cask version.

Clear copper colour body with a nice sized dense off-white head. Aroma of caramel, english hops, alcohol, cherries and slight peaches. Medium-bodied; Nice english hoppiness-not overpowering with a strong metallic taste. Aftertaste clean and fairly english in its hoppiness. Overall, a good bitter, not the best I've had-but a great treat! I got this twelve ounce bottle purchased from a friend in Saint Louis, Missouri and sampled it on 27-December-2003 in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Nice abmer color with a think white head. The flavor is very bready with hops on the back of the tounge. The floavor will stay with you long after the first sip. I would rate this as one of my favorite seasonals for the look and taste alone.

Orangey-amber. Hazy. Wispy white head. Chewy, caramelly earthiness and mango fruitiness in the aroma. The palate is rich and woody, playing off again light tropical fruitiness. Caramelly, rich maltiness in the back. Long, sweetish, earthy finish. Robust rendition of the style, to say the least.

Weak. I expected more, even from a brewery that tends to focus on session-style ales and lagers. Pours cloudy yellow (light), with a whitish head. Grassy, fruity aroma. Flavor was too light for my liking: a touch of wheat here and there, a touch of fruitiness, and a touch of hops. Just like the Oktoberfest, finishes with a cheerio toastiness. Not among the better examples of the style.

I find this to be off style. In fact, this reminds me more of a Pale Ale or Bitter, though with a larger malt presence. Amber-colored, topped with a creamy tan head. Light, fruity aroma. Flavor is similar to the aroma- light fruity malts predominate, but hops are also quite noticeable. Finishes with a cheerio-toastiness. Not what I expect from the style, but still a pretty good beer.

A decent stout, but not very complex or flavorful. Pours a dark ruby (light does pass) with a thin tan head. Little to mention in terms of flavor; there are light roasted tones followed by an almost shy sweetness. Most comparable to the Chicory Stout by Dogfish head in its thin body and inability to challenge the palate. Nonetheless, drinkable.

A pale ale in the sense of Bass...in other words, the malts have more definition than the hops. Not very flavorful. Finishes like a watered-down Bass Ale. As with other Schlafly ales, this one seems bred for the masses, and remains quite drinkable despite its nondescript, bland nature.

What is that I detect, squire? Twigs and berries? Pine needles and moss? Privy tell. A richly complex Scotch Ale. Pours a dark amber/copper, with strong aroma. Malts attack the palate as if reminiscing the lore of Braveheart and his fighting men. This malted charge started with caramely tones and ended with a medicinal quality. A quality ale.

I really enjoyed this summer seasonal from Schlafly. Summer Kolsch has a refreshing earthy flavor with a slight hops kick (although I did not note the bitterness mentioned in several previous reviews). As with all Schlafly brews, this one appears to be designed for session quaffing, and is smooth and easy on the mouth and throat.
