Alaskan Brewing Company
Microbrewery
in Juneau,
Alaska,
United States 🇺🇸
Associated Venue: Alaskan Brewing Company
Established in 1986
In 1986, 28-year-olds Marcy and Geoff Larson reignited that tradition when they opened the Alaskan Brewing Company, the 67th independent brewery in the country and the first brewery in Juneau since Prohibition. Alaskan beers reflect many of the same characteristics of beers that were brewed here during the gold rush era. From the historically based Alaskan Amber recipe to alder-smoked malts and Sitka spruce tips, Alaskan beers reflect Juneau’s local brewing history and innovation.

Bottle. 2003. dark (not quite black) body with a cocoa colored head that disapates quickly. Aroma isn't as strong as I'd thought. Faint roastiness with a hint of chocolate. The flavor is a fantastic smokey/chocolate/cofee/caramel/creaminess that tingles the tongue. The smoke doesn't overpower, but blends very well (the high alcohol content helps and makes it's presense known). Very smooth and drinkable. Very good beer.

Draft. This is a very non-dememo beer. I'm not a big fan of the style, but this beer isn't overly flavorful, and fairly balanced - no strong hops or malt.

This beer is perhaps the best rendition of a true Kolsch style beer in N. America. Huge white head gives off mildly fruity nose with hints of German hops and caramel. Firm malty body and a smooth malty finish and lingering hops. I would call this ‘Koln in a bottle’ for a catchy marketing campaign.

(Vertical tasting with 1998 - 2000 samples. Points given above are 2002. 1998 between brackets below.) Colour: Deep brown - nearly black. Brown yellow head ['98 identical but more pearling inside the glass, and more stable head- 4] Nose yields rich chocolate, mocca, grapes, ripe plums whilst pouring; settled the smoked and cured hamodour raises up - also a nose of glycerine soap.[Chocolate, plums, spicey -cardemom peel- whilst pouring. The smokiness here is really smoked baconrind, sharper. No soapy smell - 8] Rich smoked flavour. definitely wood, also pipe tobacco. Mmm, this IS good. ['98: all the above, but more subdued. There is surprisingly more sweetness apparent. strange, in taste I prefer the younger version - 7] Both obviously very rich mouthfeel. ['98 seems lighter at first, but equals out after a while - 4] Long bitter finish; bitter chocolate, hops, coffee. the younger beer seems somewhat less bitter. I can understand why M.J. bombarded this brew into a world classic. It gives the best from both Porter and Rauchbier styles. Holy smoke! [17]

I had heard so much about this beer. When I tried it, it was very disappointing. Guess I just don''t like the smoked style
