Cask @ Upper George Hotel, Halifax. Golden with a creamy head. It's a full-bodied malty-hoppy ale, but with more of the former.

Cask @ Upper George Hotel, Halifax. Dark copper-red with a creamy head. It's a malty ale, not much 'dark' influence apart from its colour.

Handpull cask at the Bowling Green, Leicester. Light brown, cloudy, with a ring of off-white head. Reasonable scent of earth, wood shavings, guava paste, sarsaparilla. Sweet gentle floral taste with a touch of tannin in the aftertaste. Pleasant in a way, it has character but doesn't hang together well enough.

Bottle from Bridlington Co-op. An amber brew with a thin white head and a rather prickly fizz at first, although this did ease off a bit. Nice rich malty smell. Taste is more malt and red fruits and fudge and just a hint of metal. Maybe just a tadge too sweet, but still good to have a traditional malty bitter, they seem all too rare these days. Enjoyed it.

Colchester Beer Festival. Cask. Almost clear amber beer, a few pale cream colour bubbles. Light palate, semi dry. modest carbonation. Smooth malts, mildly sweet. Contrasting bitter floralness and tangy dried fruits. Ripe fruits. Floral tangy finish. Comes over as a tangy bitter more than an old ale. Fine.

Cask gravity at 21sT South Downs Beer Fest. It pours deep red - brown with a small white head. The aroma is earthy roast, bitter - sweet, dried berry, caramel, cocoa and charry wood. The taste is pretty drying, bitter, earthy roast, charred wood, tannin, stewed black tea and fruity berry tang. Finish is pretty drying and tannin. A fair mild, but far from a game changer.

Cask at the Cheshire Cheese, Buxton. Very pale gold with a thin white head. Light sulphur with caramel, white sugar and a wisp of lemon in a sweetish finish. Insipid both in looks and taste, and I’m not a fan of the dated, sexist pump clip either (only bought it because I need the East Yorkshire ticks, otherwise would have avoided on principle).
