Great happiness with Abbaye des Rocs previously, I have held Grand Cru back until now. I got the 11.2 fl oz bottle from some nice people in Belgium that delivered, in all ways. I’m using my ABGB snifter for this sampling because it is my choice. Yep. I pour firmly and down the center, a nice caramel colored body and a strong tawny brown head that settles. The scent, inviting as I hoped, dates, cut hay and cane sugar. But the taste tops all of it. I find toffee, wheat bread, alfalfa (like I ever eat that), light syrup and just a bit of grape, where did that come from? Not my favorite dark ale but I am pleased.

28 April 2019. At Zythos Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke, 77ships & tderoeck! Clear pale golden, lasting, thin, foamy, white head. Aroma of ripe banana & apple, honey, white bread, yeast, apricot, coriander. Taste is light fruity sweet, notes of banana & apricot next to bitter grass, spices & pepper, vague honey, quite bready & yeasty with a metallic touch, which remains into the dry finish where some more grassy hops pop up. Medium body, slick-watery texture, fizzy carbonation. Disappointing overall.

Brune was delivered to me by a retail shipper out of Belgium, super pleased to have the chance to try it. 330 ml and best by 9/7/20 on the label. I'm using my Straffe Hendrik glass to sample this one, I lift the lid and pour to see a pecan brown body and an eggshell colored head. The foam rapidly dissipates but there's a steady stream of effervescence. The scent, hey, top level, caramel, wheat bread and dates. A taste, nice indeed, hard candy, grain, bark, malt and yeast and figs. I will linger with this one. A wealth of riches.

27 April 2019. At Zythos Bierfestival. Deputy Taster: Anke. Cheers to Ama Deke, Erwin, John & Meeki! Clear dark golden, unstable, thin, off-white head. Aroma of honey, biscuit, white bread, ripe orange, banana, apricot, apple sauce, white sugar. Taste is medium fruity sweet, ripe banana & apple on bready, honey-like, almost biscuity maltiness, bitter accents of grass & pepper leading to a dryish, grassy hoppy finish where mellow fruit & (residual) white sugar linger, and a dash of triple sec-like alcohol warms the throat. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Not sure what the aim was here - a bit too sweet even if, apparently, there is no sugar in it.
