Hazy, golden colour. Massive head. Fruity (pineapple) hop aroma. Somewhat fruity and -surprise, surprise- very bitter flavour. The bitterness lasts an eternity.

2004 bottle consumed July 2005. Light strawberry to deep, blood-red color as the pour progresses and more sediment is added. Good-sized head with light whisps of lacing. Smells of tart yeast, cherry medicine (dry), black pepper and a merlot-shiraz mix. Flavor is black chery meat, sour cherry skins, lots of cherry medicine and black pepper. Light vinousness and very yeasty, but dry and lightly tart throughout. Tingly carbonation carries a spiciness all over the palate. Just really well-done and drinkable. Low acidity hits the back of the mouth. Retronasal hops?? Very earthy and leafy, if that’s really what it is. Medium to medium-full body. I drank this bottle over the course of 2 weeks (stuffing the cork back in between sessions) and it was flat, but not anywhere near thin or watery. Really interesting beer, I find myself falling somewhat short of being able to describe it as well as I would like.

(Bottle 75 cl) Paper wrapping says: Lot # 000002. Dark golden beer, slightly hazy with a thick, creamy head. Spicy - pehaps a wee hint of aniseed and oranges. Pronounced tartness and a very dry, bitter finish. 230202

Blood red colour. Fairly low head. Acidic aroma with notes of barnyard and raisins. Tart cherry flavour. Somewhat chalky finish.

Draught. Hazy yellowish nutbrown colour, creamy white head. Wheat, yeast and sour fruit in aroma. Huge hoppy fruitish flavour. IPA-like.

Bottle Off-white, creamy head, which diminishes totally. Spare lace. Clear amber body. Nice complex aroma of hops (flowers) and hints of caramel. Lightly sweet, moderately bitter initial flavour. Lightly sweet, heavily bitter finish. Medium to fully bodied. Lively carbonation. This one is a complex, bitter typical De Ranke-ale, but not as bitter as the XX Bitter.

(Bottle 75 cl) Was this brewed by Deca for De Ranke all the time? Or did De Ranke do their own brewing in the early years. Well, this was clearly an early version - paper wrapping says Lot # 000001. Pretty, hazy honeygolden with a frothy almost fat head. Very refined spiciness in both flavour and aromas. And calling this "bitter" is no lie. It’s close to paralyzing my taste buds, hence I don’t really sense the subtlety of this brew. Pity as I’m really an Orval afficionado. Must come back to this. 100299

Light amber golden color with a thick white head. Candy sugar, chocolate, dog food and a bit of orange peel in the nose. Starts mildly sweet, relatively flat mouth, oranges, chocolate and some candy sugar. Light dry orangey finish. Kind of reminds me of a want to be Orval.

2001 1.5L bottle at the Ratebeer Mondial Tasting on 6/4/05.
Hazy, soft, yellow orange, somewhat like peach juice, though a bit paler than that. Moderate white head recedes to ring, with little lacing. Dry, powdery yeast and orange rinds in the nose. Definite herbal/floral hops, fresh parsley, mint and cumin. Corky/woody notes as well. Begins moderately acidic in flavor, with the dry yeast and cork flavors from the nose. Some bits of powdery, lime-flavored sugar a la Vervifontaine Fagnard Blonde. Tart apples, caramel, biscuity malt, definitely some green raisins/special B. Toasted grains in both texture and flavor on the finish. Low carbonation, no alcohol noted. A lemon-lime like hops flavor from the start can still be found on the end. Slightly bitter overall, quite dry on the palate.
