Re-rate 11/1/10: Bottle at a tasting. Thanks zvikar. Hazy orange with a white head. Fruity aroma with a bit of yeast, a bit of candies and alcohol. Sweetish flavor with some malt, a bit of caramel, honey, some graininess, some fruits and a slightly drier finish. Medium-bodied. 6/3/6/3/13=3.1
Bottle. Dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, dark fruity, brown sugar, some licorice, and a bit of alcohol. Flavor is sweetish and fruity. A bit of a spicy finish, with very little bitterness. A medium body. Nice, not very strong, and easy to drink. 7/4/7/3/15=3.6

This beer has one of the best aromas I have found. It is unusually complex and pleasant. The first aroma is port. Next is malt with dark fruit sweetness with some pear. The alcohol is there as well, but compliments rather than overwhelms the other aromas. I also perceive light wheat and coriander. The beer is very dark brown and cloudy; thick with sediment. The foam lasts a long time in a quarter-inch layer on top of the beer. Flavor is dominated by sweet malt. Hop presence is minor. There is also fruit and some wine, as well as wild game. The only negative about this beer is the alcohol level. It is completely hidden in the flavor and aroma, but so strong that it has a desensitizing effect on my tongue. Excellent.

My first beer after the end of law school finals; fall 2006. This is very good. Aroma has just a hint of barnyard weirdness; nothing like a lambic, just a touch of it. Also sweet malt, fruit, and a touch of alcohol. Dark brown. The head is medium sized and rocky, and on the thin side as well. Which isn’t bad in this case. Brown foam. Flavor is sweet malt, some fruit, a little chalk, banana, brown sugar, and yeast. This beer has an exceptional palate. It is a fairly thick beer but feels exceptionally light on the palate. Just a little sourness in the finish.

Color is brown!...frothy frothy and frothy...not getting an aroma at all except for mild malts..flavor is similar to that of a brown ale...and much respect for the disguise of alcohol

Bottled(330ml). -How come that this beer is (so) bad and the rest of two are great? Nice murky reddish/brown coloured, medium sized pale brown head, slightly fruity nose. Aroma is malty and fruity with notes of toffee and cocoa, few metallic hints. Quite weak and big disappointment in comparison with other two.

Bottle. Tons of complexity in this one through entire beer. Pour is murky brown and copper. Thin head fades quickly, but remnants on edge of glass. Aroma and taste are malt, spice, alcohol, and almost a sweet syrup (tasted more of this as it warmed). Love the layered flavors in this one.

2018 rating. Bottle at the Istria Gourmet Festival. Well - it was free so time to rerate. Finally. Hazy red-amber with an off-white head. Strong earthy notes ober sweetish maltiness, honey and coriander in the aroma. Lighter taste, but earthy again, elegant honeyish maltiness, coriander creating almost a Jaffa-like effect at times... But the earthiness is just a no. Good carbonation though. Well, a much higher score now, but it's still radically inferior to the other two. 2006 rating. Bottled at the Hopdevil in Zagreb The other two Rocheforts were in my opinion the best beers I’ve ever had, and I ordered this with great expectations... that proved to be misplaced. This poured a truly lovely murky deep red body on top of which perched a small beige head, but went away fast. The nose was really weak and subtle compared to its brothers. Just some fruitiness and a hint of acidity. The taste... well, let’s just say that my first impression was What the...?. Nothing. Weak, watery, just some faint lemon, cardboard and slightly unpleasant yeastiness and some ok, but way too subtle fruitiness. How underwhelming. I probably had a bad bottle, and I will be trying this again. Until then, I stand firmly by my ratings. 5/5/4/2/8

Bottled at the Hopdevil in Zagreb Poured an opaque dark brown colour with a teeny tiny head that vanished quickly. A lovely, strong banana and bubblegum aroma emanated from the bottle. Upon further inspection, a vinous background to the nose showed up, along with some yeasty hints. The taste is not as flashy and assertive as I hoped it would be but still lovely and complex. Dark malts, raisins, brown sugar, a hint of plums, a weak touch of dark chocolate mixed with chicory and some yeastiness. A bitter (and a bit roasty) aftertaste. Damn smooth. Reminds me of several beers at once but is way better than all of them. Can’t say it’s better than the 8, but it’s not worse.

I do not really like this beer as much as I liked the other Trappistes. It might be because there is less alcohol and it is is only a Dubbel as opposed to a Trippel or a Quad. Is this beer better than 95 percent of the other beers out there? Yes, of course it is. Nice sweet, thick, huge head, complex palate.
