Description
2005 saw the acquisition of Jennings Brewery by Marston’s PLC.

In 2009, the Cockermouth floods had a huge impact on the business and the site, forcing Marston’s to implement flood safety features and barricades throughout the site. A few short years after the floods, brewing transferred out of the town and a mass rebrand occurred.

Marston's retrained ownership of the brewery (through Carlsberg UK) until it closed its doors in November 2022

(Bottle 50 cl) Very dark brown with a reddish hue and a tall and lacing head. Dark, malty notes. Markedly bitter with a discreet underlying sweetness. Has the sort of "ashy" dryness so often found in stouts which the beer closely resembles. Not bad, just not really up my alley. 141002

Clean golden color. The aroma is a bit cheesy. The flavor is not surprising, but at least there is some malt; the hopping is decent, well bitter, butterscotch, lightly aromatic and metallic. Quite pleasant.

2008-12-18, cask conditioned at J.D. Wetherspoon - Penderel’s Oak, London, 6-4-7-3-13=33
Dark amber color; thin frothy head. Simple aroma, light chocolate. Caramel flavor, creamy and a bit cheesy, light chocolate, with light sweetness; correct bitterness, with more chocolate in the end. Good.

2005-12-03, cask conditioned at Charlie’s Pub, Copenhagen, 6-3-7-3-13=32
Dark amber color. Some malt aroma, good malty body, well structured, a lot of caramel, correct bitterness, long. Served in very good conditions!

[Cask at Charlie’s Bar, Copenhagen] A deep red beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of berries. The flavor is sweet with notes of berries, toffee, malt, and spices - especially cardamom comes thru. But the body is thin.

500ml bottle from Morrison’s. Brown/chestnut colour with thin beige head. Good malt hop aroma. The hops in fact are really quite intense. Red/black fruits in the mix there with some toffee as well. Touch of yeast too. Good nose, not too hot in the middle and then this aggressive hop finish. Fine. Would probably have the cask version if I saw it.

Casked. Dark copperish brown colour, beige foamy mediumsized head. Sweetish bitter fruity aroma. Smooth caramellish/fruity flavour with kind of dry finish. Some earthy hints too.
