Description
Founded in 1784 by Jean Baptiste De Bruin and still a family brewery to this day; known as Brouwerij Schelfaut until 1919, when the name was changed to Brouwerij Bios by Paul Van Steenberge, who became the head of the operation in 1922. Currently operated by his great-grandson Jef Versele (since 1998). Underwent many technical upgrades and expansions since then, most notably in 2017 when new buildings were installed and production capacity was significantly increased.

Poured from 330mL bottle (bb 04/09/26). Hazy blonde gold with full white head. Belgian yeast, light esters, dry finish, a bit sweet upfront, average body, some booze on the finish. Underwhelming tripel.

Pours a reddish brown with a large off-white head. Complex aroma of bready malts, dried dark fruits, raisins, cherry, plum, wine, caramel, syrup, yeast, brown sugar, cognac. Flavour is syrupy sweetness, dried fruit. Alcohol is rather noticeable, don’t say this dragon didn’t warn you. Carbonation is rather lively. Classy brew, excellent sipper.

As Steenberge Premium Pilsener. Aroma of sweet malts, grainy. Flavour is malty sweetness, a sickly sweetness that I did not enjoy. I like my Pilseners less sweet and more bitter. Did not enjoy.

Aroma of dark malt, caramel, dark fruits, raisins, candy. Flavour is medium sweet with a hint of bitterness in the long finish. Smooth and full. Still a bit too sweet for my taste. Otherwise okay Belgian take on the Bock.
