Three Tuns Brewery
Microbrewery
in Bishop's Castle,
Shropshire,
England 🏴
Associated Venue: Sun Inn
Established in 1642
It’s 1642 and a half-timbered building is built in Salop Street Bishop’s Castle to brew real ale for the coaching inn next door, the Three Tuns Inn and our real ales come to life for the first time.
The current classic tower brewery with a 10BBL plant was built in 1888. The beers were sold under the name Three Tuns. Brewing ceased in September 2001 due to problems with beer quality due to some equipment needing replacing with brewing being carried out by Hobson's.
in January 2003, our brewery is bought by John Roberts’ Brewing Co.Ltd. - the name of which celebrates our historic association, over about a century, with the Roberts family. Our brewery is fully refurbished, ensuring its brewing future for many years to come.

Bottle at home. Pours a reddish brown with a thin white short-lived head. Aromas are all about Christmas - sugar, spice, fruit cake, cinnamon, honey. Taste is more of the same, but too much sugar for me. Very rich for the abv.

Pint at The Royal Hill Inn, Oswestry. A good British bitter with grass, malts, grain and a dry bitterness to see it home.

Cask at the Craven Arms, Birmingham. Poured a dark brown colour with a reddish hue and an off-white head. The aroma is dry malt leading to a weak bitter flavour with loads of roasted malt and a gorgeous smooth palate with a malty finish. A classic session mild from the UK’s oldest brewery.

Cask at the Bell, Leominster, Herefordshire on 6th April 2013. Slightly hazy gold with thin white head. Cheesy yeasty aroma. Sweet fruits and malts in-mouth with citric tang. Bittersweet finish with developing sharp bitter note.

On cask @ Uxbridge Arms, Chasetown - Black body with a frothy tall dark tan head. Smooth roast aroma with caramel and toffee under the roast. Sweet sugary taste with some coffee in there. Medium-light mouthfeel with a nice crisp dry finish. Enjoyed.

Half-pint: hand-pulled on 26 Mar 2013 at a Shropshire Cask Festival in ’The Haygate’ Wellington. Dark, rich and very sweet. Looked fine, an almost black body with a good creamy head of tanned foam. The aroma given off was of a sweet alcoholic fruit cake heavily laden with plums, the taste followed suit. A bit too sweet, even for my palate: a nice night cap though after drinking pints of lighter and less alcoholic beers earlier in the session.

Bottle at Craft Beer Clerkenwell thanks to Bob, 09/03/13. Chestnut brown with a big beige head that retains well. Nose is caramel, toffee, light spice, boozey. Taste follows, dark fruits, booze. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Decent enough fayre!
