Rustik. En bra Biere de garde.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, 11 20 printed on the back label (best before date?). Pours lightly cloudy golden orange color with a nice 3 finger fluffy white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice foamy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big pear, grape, citrus zest, pepper, clove, herbal, floral, earth, grass, hay, light funk, bread, and yeast spiciness. Damn nice aromas with good balance, strength, and complexity. Taste of pear, apple, citrus zest, pepper, clove, herbal, floral, grass, hay, earth, bread, light funk, light honey, and yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of light fruits, pepper, clove, hay, grass, herbal, floral, earth and yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic flavor balance and complexity; nice spicy/malt flavor balance; zero cloying flavors on the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a lightly slick and very crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with zero warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Biere De Garde! Great flavor balance and complexity; very smooth to sip on for 8.3%. This is extremely crisp and delicious stuff.

750 ml corked and clamped bottle. Pours clear gold with a large white soapy head with good retention. Aroma consists of barnyard funk, banana, earth, doughy bread. Taste is sweet and savory, like fresh-mown hay; finishes dryly. Not bad.

33cl Bottle (funny shaped thing) best before 17 Mar 2014: poured into a Duvel glass on 28th Sep 2012. Huge, huge head on this pour: good job i was prepared and used the Duvel glass: looked good actually, the snowy white mountain of foam filled the glass before I could get all the beer out the bottle. I had the sediment laden remains later. The colour of the body was a copper/orange/deep amber and clear. Mixed bag in the aromas: once the smells could get through the head I found some malty molasses and spicy hop notes, add floral and nut esters with maybe a cherry/almond tart floating in the middle. The taste seemed more ’yeasty’ than the smell would indicate: again it was a mixture of flavours (like the nose), the alcohol playing its part too. originally on the sweet side the hops kicked in mid-sip and the finish was boardering on bitter. Interesting and well worth finding, yet another French beer I’ve enjoyed.

330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 8.5%. Beautiful clear amber to copper colour, large off-white head. Nice malty and slightly spicy aroma, with notes of caramel, brown sugar and dark dried fruits. The flavour is medium sweet, malty and spicy with distinct notes of caramel, also brown sugar and raisins. Moderate hops in the finish. Warming mouthfeel, very enjoyable.
