Hazy orange with a lasting off-white head. Sweet american hop aroma, peach, pine, tea and roses. Dry hoppy flavour with floral hop and some caramel malty notes. Burning hot alcohol is not so good, but the long hoppy aftertaste is good.

First, a HUGE thanks goes out to Wetherel for bringing this bottle to Japan and sharing it with us. 2006 vintage, #113. Roasted, oaky aroma with nice bourbon and creamy malts. The body isn’t as thick as I was expecting, but still quite full. The roasted malts are strong, but not overly so. Oak, bourbon, coffee, some cream, and sweet molasses. Hands down the most well blended barrel aged beer I’ve ever had. Nothing is overwhelming in this brew, just a beautifully complex, expertly blended stout. Sharing this at Ushitora was a nice way to experience this one (so was chugging the last of it from the bottle). Thanks again, Wetherel!

Pours with a large, foamy, light brown head, very dark brown body. Aroma of plums, rum soaked raisins, chocolate, and cocoa powder. Extremely mouth coating feeling...very, very syrupy. Very sweet and chocolatey up front with some sticky toffee too. A bit of bitter coffee rounds out the finish. Amazingly good desert drink (goes well with vanilla ice cream, and tastes amazing as a float). As a side note, I am going to go buy a bottle tomorrow and age it for about 4.5 years, to make a killer winter desert treat.

bottle - Pours dark amber with a one finger, very long lasting head. The aroma is of caramel malt, citrus hops, and some light spices. The flavor is a good balance of those rich malts and ample hops along with some woody notes. Sure I drank mine in the summer, but this full bodied brew would be best consumed slowly on a cold night in front of a warm fire. Enjoy.

Pours with a large, thick white head covering a slightly hazy golden body with tiny bubbles. Strong, heavy, sip by sip lacing left on the sides of my Stone Gaurdian glass. Retention from the head is full throught the lifetime of the glass. Aroma is very nice with citrus (mainly grapefruit) and floral hops galour, a little bit of spiceyness, and some sweet malts and some rich nearly dark fruits in the back. Taste is nice and balanced IPA with a very refreshing hop bitterness in great balance with the sweet malts and alcohol. Finishes with a rich spiceyness that is not too common in basic IPAs. Mouthfeel is velvety with lively bubbles. Deserves to be the best IPA on the site.

750 ml. Maybe because age has muted the hops I liked this American Strong Ale more than other heavily hopped beers in this style. Hazy amber body with a long-lasting off-white, creamy head. The aroma is malty and fruity with hints of hop citrus — caramel, plum, raisin, toffee, molasses, banana and vanilla. And then there is also a slight hint of spice, perhaps the combination of all the other aromas. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, mildly bitter and lightly acidic. Slight bitterness in the finish. The body is thick and chewy with a velvety texture. Moderate carbonation. Excellent.

750 ml bottle purchased mail order from South Bay in Imperial Bay, California. Not sure age on this, though I purchased it from Joey on the May 29th, 2007. I believe this was a fresh bottle when I purchased it. Pour is a hazy orange and ruby with a very thin off white head that fell to bubbles quickly. Aroma is very full and wonderful. Immediately, get quite a bit of caramel sweet citrus and malt. Very much an American Barley Wine nose. Underneath, a bit of honey, some grainy, floral earthiness. Faint whiff of alcohol behind all of that. Taste mirrors the nose closely, starts bittersweet citrus, gives way to caramel maltiness and finishes with some additional honey sweetness. The finish is earthy and dry, with a tiny touch of alcohol heat. The honey sweetness in the finish is not quite cloying, but certainly is in that direction. Palate is medium, suits the beer nicely. Overall, a very satisfying Barley Wine. I can imagine this one is pretty hoppy fresh. Thanks for selling mail order, Joey!
