Cask handpull at the Richard John Blackler (JDW), Liverpool. Black beer with brown edges, lasting beige head. So this is good. There has been a lot of traffic on Scoopgen about this beer. Some dark malts on aroma, good sourish dark fruits, bit of dark choc. Juicy, rather than powdery, but there is roasted dryness and some hop on end. Intense finish of sour fruit, bit of liquorice, some molasses. Oddly likeable. Not a bitter mind, more an old ale or porter.

Dark brown amber with creamy white head. Strong roasted malts. Dark fruits & bitter roasted feel.. Port notes. Sweet warm (alcohol) filling body with a nice & bitter finish!

Cask (handpump) @ Market Porter, SE1, London. Medium amber / red color with a small white head. Aroma is malty, roasted, caramel, fruit (apple, grape ?). flavor is moderate sweet with a light bitternes. and a average duration. Very easy to drink, quite enjoyable.

Thin white film of a head; deep dark red body, barely translucent. No aroma. Taste is soft and sweet with woody licorice notes. Very mild-tasting. Some alcohol heat. Not bad, but a bit boring. (0.5pt on cask.)

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 26 Nov) Dark brown colour with ruby notes, small head. Malty, nutty nose with notes of dried fruit and chocolate. Malty, nutty taste with dried fruit (prunes, raisins), chocolate and blackberries. Alcohol well hidden. Smooth, drinkable, warming and seductive.

Bottle picked up at Tuckers Maltings, Newton Abbot,, Devon 14-11-06 had the same evening. This started off great but finshed a touch disappointingly some spices, hops abound, could have been a lot lot better.

Since I gave the the bottle version a relatively high score, I decided to give the cask version a try at The St Albans Beer Festival. Mahogany red-tinged in colour, but without any foam at all. Dark fruity to the nose which also has got a component of floral hop. Vinous taste of port and cherry-like notes. Notes of sweet malt, liguarice and grain shine through. Suggestions of raisin and prunes towards the end. Full bodied. Good brew fully equal to the bottle version. (Half pint, 28.09.2006).

Half on cask. Amber coloured with good clarity and a low creamy head. Light hoppy aroma. Moderate hop bitterness in flavour. Light to medium mouthfeel. Average bitter (The Champion, Norwich 24.09.2006).

Cask at The Champion Norwich 24 Sep 06. Golden coloured. A small creamy head. Mild. Fruity and bitter hints - but very faint. Some sweetness in the finish.

Cask at The Penny Black, JDW, Bicester 23-09-06. Warm golden in colour, with a very tight white head. Fresh hoppy and quite tasty bitter, finish is dryish and slightly bitter.
