Bottle (500 ml) at home, gift. Somewhat hazy amber-orange with lots of carbonation and a smallish white head. Aroma of leaf fall and light honeyed fruit. Also in the aroma is that harsh metallic tinge peculiar to supermarket bitters. The taste is sweet and malty, with a tinge of acridness at the end. The palate is buoyed up by the carbonation. It’s ok but there are a lot of flaws that keep it from being a good beer.

Cask at the Britannia (McMullen’s), Marlow. A dark brown beer with a thick off-white head; toffee aroma with a touch of spice; some orangey fruit and treacly malt flavours; and a sweet finish. A nice wintry ale.

50cl bottle from Asda. Bright amber with a billowing cream head; citrusy aroma; creamy body with a fresh citurs taste; and a clean finish. A straightforward golden ale.

Cask pint at The Nags Head. Amber colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma, hints of toffee and nuts. Smooth flavour, mostly malty but not sweet, tolerable hops in the finish.

Cask pint at The Nags Head, Covent Garden. Copper colour, moderate white head. Malty aroma, a hint of malt vinegar. Malty flavour, minimal hops, mild roasty notes in the finish. Certainly not an IPA by any stretch of the mind.
