A well carbonated straw body with a pillowy white head. Grain, honey and lemon on the nose. the grain is front and centre in the taste profile. Citrus rind and lemon juice are punched up by the high level of carbonation. Honey holds it together and smooths out the aftertaste. Tasty but some tastes are a bit rough and green.

An unusually pale and clear body for a quad, with a lated white head. Nose features banana, sweet malt and fruity yeast esters. A balanced but relatively understated taste profile with a range of tropical fruit, banana, melon, sweet malt and Belgian yeast.

Matched this BTP North Eastern IPA offering up against an array of Vermont versions of this new style de jour. Verdict? The effective use of Galazy hops here pushed it to the top of the list for juiciness, balance in the fruity hop elements, and drinkability. A great demo of the range of this Ottawa micro.

With a year in the bottle, this beer is filling out and showing more than sweet chocolate. The nose has chocolate, coffee, a touch of sourness and a slight vegetal underlay. The taste has developed an endearing smokiness on top of sweet chocolate, roasted coffee and a touch of fudge. Rich and a bit slick. Likin’ this aged version more than the fresh, green version.

A sizable well laced and sustained white head on a near transparent light straw body. A faint nose features herbaceous and tropical notes. A well blended and refreshingly new take on the IPA. In spite of the promo material, there are fresh tropical fruit in the taste profile - kiwi, papaya and really tasty ripe melon notes. Herbs, lemon, a touch of funky yeast and a grassy finish round out the blend. Very nice.

Lemon, orange and malt of the nose. Some serious fruity bite for a 4.9% pale ale. Orange rind, lemon and pine are supported by soft, sweet malt. Pepper, a touch of soap and solid carbonation add to the mouth festival.

A dense, pillowy tan head, well laced. Near black body. The nose features mild but fresh ground coffee, a touch of cream and some chocolate fudge. The happy goat coffee is fresh and tasty - a nice slightly bitter tinge to it. Secondary tastes include chocolate fudge, caramel and roasted malt. Medium density and stays well balanced to the end. Very nice.

Another well crafted, fruit forward ale for Beyond the Pale. A solid, well laced white head on a light straw body. The nose is all about fresh lemon and orange zest. Tonnes of punchy taste here for a 5.1% ABV, 20 IBU wheat ale. Orange, lemon and grapefruit lead the taste profile. Light bready malt adds sweetness and a light graininess add to the body. A bit of peach and soap in the finish. Touches of acidity and tartness; solid carbonation; and wheat ale lightness keep the sweet malt in balance. Really flavourful beer.

A pillowy off white head on a rich amber body. The nose features prominent elements of rindy citrus hops, caramel and apricot. Some big, fresh elements here but still a bit raw, even with the year of aging. Fruity hops, butterscotch, apricots, raisins and pepper don’t necessarily blend completely together. The resolve is a bit metallic. I will give the second bottle another year.

A pillowy white head on a clear lemon juice body. The nose is of moderate prominence, with pineapple, lemon and orange notes. A gnarly citrus hop presence dominates the initial flavour profile. I’m not complaining. The pineapple, orange and lemon in the nose are magnified in the beer taste. The bready malt steps back to let the fruity hops step up. The strong bitterness works well with the clean, crisp mouth feel and finish. Along with Aroma Therapy and This is Not a Pumpkin Beer, the Juicy Dream completes a powerful triumvirate of punchy IPAs for BTP this brewing season. Has anyone in Ontario done better?
