(Bottle 50 cl) Beautiful clear, dark amber colour with a very small, off-white head. Lightly caramelish nose. Rather light-bodied with notes of roasted malt and caramel without any real sweetness. Lacks some character - appears like a cheapish version of Newcastle BA. 310805

750 ml bottle, bought in Denmark. I had to try this one, despite being sceptical to the gimmicky name: IMO, most good beers are worth "to dine for" (with a possible exception of the very sweetest ones), so why should this one be different? It isn’t - it’s basically a decent standard golden ale, where the Tettnang hops (more commonly found in German lagers) shine through nicely. Citrussy aroma, notes of flowers and honey. Pleasant lightbodied flavour with a moderate but decent hoppiness throughout, nice but nothing spectacular. No doubt good with food (I must admit that my "dining" was limited to a couple slices of pizza), but again: so are many other beers.

Cask. Nicely hoppy aroma, dry hopped? Dark copper colour. Small creamy head. A little thin and watery flavour, but nicely hopped. Thin body. A bit like hop water.

Cask at The Ship, Sandgate, Kent Amber colour, aroma of cinnamon and floral hops, lots of citric lemon flavours in mouth with hoppy lemony finish. The fruit I though was a little artificial and there is not enough about the rest of the beer to balance it.

Bottle (vintage 2000): dark amber colour, red sparks, thin brownish head, lacing; dark malt and vinous fruit (plums) aromas; starts with a sweet sour maltiness; big deep complex taste: winey fruit and malt in the mouth, quite full bodied; finishes with big fruity and some chocolate tastes; a very rich brew, not so sour as the flemish "brothers", hearty, juicy: extremely pleasant !

An orange beer with a small disappearing off-white head. The aroma is sweet malty, but also with notes of caramel, hops, and brunkager ("browncakes"). The flavor is hoppy and spicy - I pick up cinnamon - but I also pick up an off-note I can’t put words to, before a dry end sets in.

Bottled, vintage 2000 (BB 10/2006)
My 100th rated English beer
Dark ruby color, small mostly vanishing tanned head. Sweet berry-like aroma with oak, alcohol and licorice - like in a portwine. Medium to full-bodied. Tasty oaky tannine flavors with liquerish palate. Oily slightly alcoholic and hoppy bitter aftertaste. Palate just not hold 100% till the end but otherwise an outstanding beer.

Cask conditioned at the Baron of Beef, Cambridge. Was also available at the Cambridge Beer Festival. Deep golden colour, low head. Nice refreshing hoppiness throughout, citrussy elements in aroma and flavour. Decent.

Over-excited 4.4 rating from 2005. Re-rate 2011. Dark brown with a lively off-white head. Lots of caramel and fruit in the nose, along with raisin and port. Sweet caramel malty flavour, perhaps a bit of diacetyl, with fruity notes and a slightly tart note in the finish. Wasn’t as amazing as I remembered - very Greene King...
