500 ml bottle, as "Greene King Strong Suffolk Vintage Ale", vintage 2000, sampled May 2005 at the Champion of the Thames, Cambridge. Served too cold from the fridge. Deep brown to ruby colour, large thick head. Vinous aroma, oak and claret, hints of English pipe tobacco. (One of the punters was smoking his pipe in the pub when I sampled this beer, but I swear the beer had some unsmoked pipe tobacco aroma too.) Vinous flavour (old port wine) with caramel and raisins. A bit too sweet for my taste (or maybe I was too drunk to fully appreciate the sweetness?)

Cask conditioned at the Robin Hood & Little John, Cherry Hinton, Cambridge (a Greene King pub). Copper coloured, minimal carbonation. Moderate caramel and malt vinegar aroma. Malty flavour, caramel, low bitterness. ABV is well hidden. OKish, but not really exciting. Disappointing held up to my (failing?) memory of the bottled/canned version. The Old Speck’ is a better choice.

(Bottle 66 cl) Beautiful amber-coloured, pretty much without head. Strongly hoppy nose, and hop-aromatic all the way through without being bitter. More sweet actually. The label claims this beer tastes like melon - well, maybe so... 140604

Gravity cask @ Red Lion, Stodmarsh, Kent. It’s alright. What else is there to say? Mid brown, with some hops and some malt on nose, ok in mouth if slightly thin, with not a lot of aftertaste, but some hop bitterness. Nothing exceptional

Bottle Dark amber, champagne bubbes, low foamy lacing amber head. Fresh English hops and biquit malt. Light bisquit malt body with a nice whiff of hops (citrus, pine, dust). One of the better bottled ales.

Bottled. Copper coloured, big white foamy head. Fruity bitter aroma. Bitter fruity flavour with sweetish finish. Makes mouth a bit sticky. Local pub (Public Corner) seems to enjoy taking in British bitters...

Bland. Pale with a creamy head. Smells like sour beer. Tastes like nothing... really. A hint of creaminess, but nothing else.

Cask conditioned at The Wheatsheaf, Parsons Green, London. Served a bit too cold for a cask ale. Honey coloured. Minimal head. Little detectable aroma, a smoky pub probably had most of the blame. This is a smooth and very drinkable bitter without too much character. Moderate hoppiness, hardly an "authentic" IPA.

Draught. I was told this is a new version of the beer. Aromatic hop aroma with a hint of metal. Light golden colour, small head. Light, aromatic flavour. Hint of sweetness, with an acidic bonbon quality.

Bottled. Golden colour. Aroma of caramel and grass. Sweet and somewhat thin with clean mouthfeel and low-medium bitterness. A boring beer with an industrial feel to it.
