Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Bottle at LKS - thanks to the host! It pours jet black with a massive tan head. The aroma is earthy, toasty, umami, dark chocolate, jammy fruits, rocky road, maltesers and cake. The taste is soft, sweet, sticky, milk chocolate, earthy, boozy warmth, fudge, chewy malt and leather with a dry, toasty finish. Medium+ body and fine, foamy carbonation. Nice elements to it, but lacks a bit of depth for the style. Not bad anyhow.

Opaque dark brown beer, big pale tan head. Airy dry palate, good fine carbonation. Relatively thin dark malts, spicy liquorice. Traces or toffee and caramel. Very light sherry vibe. Light dry finish. Spicy liquorice linger. Tasty but wanted more.

Geel bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is krachtig, licht zoet en kruidig met iets van kardemon, en citrus. Smaak blijft lang hangen.

33cl bottle from AbeerVinum, Rimini, Italy, discounted because expired in March. Pours medium transparency dark gold with medium white foam, fine. Aroma is grainy, honey, caramel, flowery. Body is slightly dense with good carbonation. Taste is sweet with some bitterness, remaining in particular in the finish, which is relatively long.
