Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Medium brown, with a bubbly head. On the nose, there’s some fruitiness, and some sweeter toffee notes. A bit of carbonation for the style. There’s some raisiny notes, maybe a touch of chocolate. Not actually much complexity, though…clearly the coffee comes through, and it’s still otherwise a sweetish, relatively bland strong ale.

From a 375 m bottle. Pours a hazy dark mahogany with a big tan head. Aromas of coffee, toffee and caramel. Flavors are sweet caramel and coffee cake. Very drinkable for such a big beer.

From a 375 ml bottle. Pours a murky dark brown with an ecru head. Aromas are caramel, toffee, and fruit cake. Flavor is pretty sweet, dominated by caramel malts, with a hint of oak barrel. Pretty tasty.

330ml bottle from at Alex's. Pours a hazy brown with a tan head. Aroma is a bit strange with fruity and oxidized notes. Sinilar taste with coffee notes. It is very harsh, sweet and very bitter at the same time. Not good.

330ml bottle shared with Eric in Eecke. Pours clear amber, medium white head. Aroma is sweet, grainy, honey. Light bodied, with a soft caramel sweet character, soft yeast, light spice but generally fairly clean with marmalade hints. Alright but a bit lacklustre.

Blond colour with thin head. Aroma and flavour are packed full of citrus. It's very light and although the hop intensity and alcohol level would suggest thick, heavy DIPA it's as fresh and easy as an APA. Finishes with a little spicy yeast. Very good.

Zwart bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is zoet en warm met iets van cacao, karamel, iets van port of sherry en bessen. Heel fijn om te drinken.

Bottle at LKS - thanks to the host! It pours jet black with a massive tan head. The aroma is earthy, toasty, umami, dark chocolate, jammy fruits, rocky road, maltesers and cake. The taste is soft, sweet, sticky, milk chocolate, earthy, boozy warmth, fudge, chewy malt and leather with a dry, toasty finish. Medium+ body and fine, foamy carbonation. Nice elements to it, but lacks a bit of depth for the style. Not bad anyhow.
