A hazy orange beer with a disappearing white head. The aroma is malty and slighlty sour, while the flavor is sweet malty and slighty hoppy. Boring.

Cloudy chestnut color, VERY sour nose with some dried fruit and burnt raisins. The body is incredibly smooth with low carbonation and surpisingly light for the size of the beer. I picked up dust, prunes, burnt raisins, chocolate and brown sugar in the mouth. Smooth brown sugar finish.

2003 bottle, thanks James (mutant). Pours a bright reddish-amber, with some dark browns in there. Great beige head, rich and creamy. Quite clear. Aroma is fairly light, mostly caramelly malt flavors, some rich milk chocolate and some raisins. Flavor is quite sweet (caramel, toffee, raisins, vanilla) with a bit of drying alcohol on the finish. Aside from the alcohol used to dry this one out, it is a surprisingly mellow sipper. True to the English style, there are very little hops apparent, what there are is a bit of earthy, soily flavor. Not the most complex of the style, but what it lacks in complexity, it makes up for in a delightfully rich, yet not overpowering, creamy palate; excellently balanced.

2003 bottle. Thank you Mutant, but after trying this stuff I wish I would have traded for more of it!! The aroma is in a class of its own as far as scottish ales go. Hell, the aroma is in a class of its own as far as most aromas go. Intense, permeating, and just marvelous. Big huge winey prunes in the background. Tons of sweet caramel and English toffee. Sticky, chewy and almost so big you can chew on the aroma. Dark fudge is in there, and something Scottish. Is it peat? perhaps, but it is just fantastic. Pour is a murky drab olive brown with a small off-white head. Mostly clear. Flavor delivers big time. Huge sweet caramel and toffee flavors, with a bittersweet, salty peat flavor and some hints of single malt. Body is full, mouthfeel is chewy and delightful. Low carbonation. Finish has a bit more dryness on it, some earthiness and a hint of roast. This is one of the best English toffee flavors I’ve tasted in a beer. It’s definitely a slow sipper, as it gets powerful towards the end from all of the malt sweetness. Incredible treat, one I wasnt expecting. Can’t wait for the SuperShine. Oh ya, I had this out of a snifter, which really showcases the marvelous aroma.
