Opalescent pale golden colour, moderate sized creamy white head; aroma of grainy, peppery, yeasty, some lemon zesty, floral, fruity and slight tropical fruity notes; taste is similar to the aroma with some celery notes and spicy peppery aftertasste; good one

One of the more recent additions to this Walloon brand with the characteristic glass, a hefty quad. Bottle from Drankencentrale Vanquathem in Zedelgem. Medium thick, off-white, shred-lacing, largely stable head (in spite of the alcohol), initially clear deep amber robe with orangey glow, misty with sediment – and in any case very pale for the intended style, paler even than e.g. La Trappe Quadrupel. Aroma of butterscotch, toffee, candied cherries, chewing gum, damp cotton cloth, dried cranberries, biscuit, calvados, dark honey, dried fig, vanilla extract, rosehip somewhere, touches of wet clay, clove and chicken stock. Cleanishly fruity onset, sweet, with hints of candied fig and peach jam; medium carb, smooth but quite full and resinous mouthfeel. Caramelly and lightly biscuity malt sweetness, honeyish residual sweetness on top but also something faintly toasty-bitterish, the latter aspect briefly accentuated by mild floral hop bitterness. Biscuity and honeyish sweetness linger, glowing in a pleasant and nowhere too obtrusive, armagnac-like alcohol warmth. Classically styled if a bit ‘pale’ – I miss a somewhat darker and thicker malt profile (and flavour) here; nevertheless solid, with a good balance of flavours, none of which becomes too obtrusive so that everything remains in perfect balance. One of few beers I had which actually even taste better than they smell, though there is nothing off-putting in the aroma. Almost (Belgian style) barleywine-like and potentially interesting for prolonged ageing.

29/I/24 - 33cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent), shared @ home, BB: XI/2023, L171 (2024-68)
Little cloudy amber to red brown beer, small creamy irregular beige head, unstable, dissipates quickly. Aroma: nice, slightly oxidized, caramel, ripe banana, dried fruits, bubble gum, overripe banana, yeasty, a bit woody. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: some chocolate, a bit sweet, little bitter, caramel, ripe banana, more bitterness, woody, somewhat malty. Aftertaste: sweet, caramel, vanilla, grains, soft bitterness, malty, ripe banana, more earthy, oxidized, honey, and a bit of cardboard, pretty nice nevertheless.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ van Rooij, Culemborg. Hazy light brown with a thin off-white head. Dark caramel aroma with some spices and red fruits. Sweet taste with a sweet boozy finish. Not a bad quadrupel persé but way too strong at 12% ABV which makes it too harsh to really enjoy.
